As requested:
To get Sumner's book on his lines of position, go to the Making of America
web site here: http://www.hti.umich.edu/m/moa/ .
Click "Other Searches in MoA". Then under "Search in:" select title
(important step). For "Find:", type in "Mercator's chart". And then for "Limit to"
enter "Sumner" and be sure that author is selected (that's the default). Click
Search.
To get Peirce's book explaining the math underlying 19th century Bowditch,
go to the same MoA site. This time, enter "trigonometry" for title and
"Peirce" (spelled that way) for author. Click Search.
To get Chauvenet's "Spherical and Practical Astronomy" from MoA, enter
"astronomy" for title, and "Chauvenet" for author. Search. Notice while you're
there that you can purchase brand-new reprint of Chauvenet from this service.
I think it was $35 or $40 last time I checked. This is apparently a reprint
from their scanned copy.
For Norie's Navigator from 1828, go to http://schooner.mysticseaport.org and
enter "Norie 1828" in the search box. Follow the links to the digital
version.
For Bowitch's Navigator from 1826, go to google books here:
http://books.google.com/ and enter "Bowditch date:1826-1826" in the search box. Click "Search
Books" and it should take you right to it.
For Janet Taylor's Epitome of Navigation and Nautical Astronomy from 1851,
again on google books, enter "Janet Taylor date:1851-1851" and search. It's
the first item.
Both of the google scans leave something to be desired, but it's still a
tremendous resource. Three years ago, none of these books were available online.
