Alex, I think what we now call the internet is just one of the networks that can
be traced back into ARPANET, which was a military research net. Not quite fair
to say "it" has become free and public, since there are still private networks
(military and otherwise). I suspect that if all the public switches and routers
went black, the military could still communicate on its own.<G>
We may have alternatives to "the" US military GPS net once the others all go
live and (presumably) commercial, so maybe the analogy (one military 'thing'
spawning mutliple non-military 'things') holds though.
