    Alex wrote-

    | In many places I see an article of Maskelyne
    | on Hadley octant mentioned, as
    | "a supplement to 1774 almanac".
    | Even the later almanacs mention this.
    | I downloaded the whole 1774 almanac and I
    | do not see any supplements in it.
    |
    | Where could they be??

Presumably, it was omitted from the scanning process for some reason.

I happen to have an unbound volume, "Selections from the additions that have been occasionally annexed to the Nautical Almanac, from
its commencement to the year 1812." Printed by order of the Commisioners of Longitude, London, 1813. Unfortunately, it doesn't show
the year of the almanac that a particular correction was extracted from. But it contains a 12-page entry, "Remarks on the Hadley's
Quadrant", by the Rev. Nevil Maskelyne, BD, FRS, Astronomer Royal. This looks likely to be a copy of the 1774 supplement that Alex
is looking for. If it is, and Alex is keen to see it, I am happy to scan and post it, either directly to Alex's own email address,
or if interest is shown by others, to the Nav-l blackboard.

    George.
