Das Boot is one of my favourite movies of all time. The Germans made some
very fine sextants in those days too. The Germans made great advances in
bubble and gyroscopic sextants during this period. The C.Plath bubble
attachment (adjustable bubble) was based on a design which was incorporated
into their SOLD aircraft sextants. The only other bubble horizon that beat
it hands down was the RAE MKIX series; also developed during the war.
I often wonder, if GPS, had never been invented, what astro-nav would look
like today?
And I see the Nav-L list is indeed alive.
