I've seen if from the top of the cliffs at La Jolla (it looks like a little slice of
sun that appears just after the real sun dissappears). Apparently it's a pretty
common sight there so if you had a ship with a 400' mast, you might see it
pretty regularly (though I don't see how that would help you find longitude).
