"Navigation News" is the chatty journal of the Royal Institute of
Navigation, which appears in alternate months. Don't confuse it with their
more formal and academic "The Journal of Navigation", which appears three
times a year.
The September / October issue of 2005, contains a book review by David
Page, which may be of interest to Nav-l readers.
It refers to "Earth's magnetism in the days of sail", by ARTJonkers, The
Johns Hopkins University Press, 2003, 300 pages, ISBN 0-8018-7132-8, at
$45., an edited version of the author's Ph D thesis, which was written in 2000.
Jonkers has taken magnetic information from many European logbooks and
sailing directions between 1500 and 1800. One of his observations is that
there's a scatter in measurements of magnetic variation, with a standard
deviation of about 2.5 degrees.
Sounds interesting; I don't have my own copy (yet).
George.
