John K, I just looked this up in preparation for teaching the Power & Sail
Squadron AP course this winter. The CPS-ECP AP Students Notes states that
there is no accepted abbreviation, which is why they standardized on "M" for
the purposes of their courses. There is no reference to who wrote that
piece of information, but I have to assume that course committees dug into
that issue in the recent past. I prefer NM, but statute mile is never used
in CPS-ECP courses, only nautical mile, so there would be no confusion.
