John, I've always seen and used "nm". In the context of nautical navigation,
there's nothing else that will be confused with this. Those who use "M" in a
consistent universe where all nav will be done in nautical miles as opposed
to statute are probably OK--as long as they are the only ones who will be
reading their marks. In a less professional environment, "nm" is still less
likely to be confused for anything else.
