No they did not, and they did not actually measure it.
As I said, the master just shaked the sextant arm
with his hand, and then started to rotate this
"prohibited screw" explaining through the translator
that this adjustment has to be made because the connection
between the arm and the arc is not rigid enough.
He did not use the word "backlash" and the translator did
not know this English term.
Unfortunately the weather in Kiel is still cloudy and I cannot test
the sextant after the adjustment.
