I'm not familiar with Wakeley's "Mariner's Compass Rectified," but think that
might have done the job for Scoreseby.
Sunset in the arctic would be a gradual process. Perhaps that explains why
Scoreseby used the sun's upper limb. The "now you see it, now you don't" of the
last glimmer would have been the most easily defined moment.
