    Now found the following reference in 'History of Air Navigation' by Arthur
    J, Hughes (the comments ae mine):

    "This principle (magnetic compass checking) was not employed in the air
    until the introduction of the astro compass in 1942, when a simple form of
    sun compass (he probably means simpler than the clock driven Bumstead sun
    compass to which he referes later) was designed by Mr. P.F. Everitt."

    P.F. Everitt worked for Hughes and Son in London as chief optical dsigner
    and was also the designer of the RAF Mk IX bubble sextant.
