Alex,
Unfortunately, I am thrust back once again to empirical observation
that this is the case. The observation about diffuse reflections from
a non-black fluid is the most reasonable basis for an effective
argument. I expect diffuse reflections would decrease the contrast
between the specular reflection of the object and the background.
I haven't managed to spill the corn syrup yet!
