Thanks to Paul Hirose for such a full account of the use of magnetic
    compasses in modern aircraft.

Isn't it true that magnetic bearings also enter into the labelling of
runways? I seem to remember that at airfields I've passed through, each
runway has a signpost with two numbers on, which differ by 18, and
presumably these are the approximate magnetic bearings of the runway, in
units of 10 degrees, for the runway when used in the two directions which
differ by 180 degrees. Presumably these bearings might have to be altered
now and again as the variation alters.

    George.
