    The normal radionavigation beacons, VOR's, transmit a signal that,
    when received in the airplane, identify the bearing from the airplane
    to the beacon. These beacons are adjusted so the bearing is aligned
    with magnetic north, not true north, I believe. So, an aeronautical
    map tends to be covered with little compass roses, one at each of
    these beacons, and the airways between them are marked with the
    magnetic heading to follow.
