Trevor, I suspect the tallow was borrowed from the ship's cook and not
stocked specially for navigation.
Crisco or any similar shortening should do today. More likely the cook will
have peanut butter, but axle grease would also work.<G> Perhaps even "suet"
sold for bird feeders?
