A while ago I procured a "basket case" Astra IIIB sextant and for something
to do I refurbished the thing. It functions quite well indeed for the amount
of cash I put into it.It was a fun project and I actually enjoy useing the
sextant in the backyard.
There were some issues I'll tell you of now that we're on the subject.
I purchaced a new horizon mirror assembly(split mirror) and a new index
mirror assembly. The origonal index assembly was of the old round style
mirror. What was known as the standard. When I purchaced the index assembly I
only wished to replace the standard mirror.I was informed the supplier had
no standard mirrors in stock and sent an entire square(Delux)index assembly
for the same price. The assembly came with a front silvered mirror as that
is how they are made by Astra.Even the instructions on this, the Delux, brand
new mirror assembly that supposedly has the mirror surface engineered into
the correct position reguarding the pivot plane state you must use cylinders
to null the perp.
I really don't know if what Jared states is correct.I figured since they
sent a new front mirrored index assembly to use on the frame that the
correct procedure to nulling perp on any front silvered mirror was the same.
The new horizon assembly(split)sent was totally differant from the horizon
assembly(whole)I was replacing.
