The first time I saw an artificial horizon it was one that a high school
teacher had made. It was a dish with a little bit of mercury in it with a
front surface mirror floating on the mercury. I don’t think he had any thing
to protect it from the wind. But I don’t think it was bothered by the wind
because it was almost all glass.
My system is just to use waste oil from the boatyard in a dish. I don’t
recall ever having a problem with the wind.
I have trouble seeing the stares at any time other then in the darkness. My
vision at dusk is very poor. Someone with better eyesight might be able to
use the pan of oil at dusk, but not me.
I have seen an artificial horizon that was a mirror on a tripod with two
precision levels on the glass in the x and y direction. It was a beautiful
piece of equipment and if it was a lot less expensive I would buy one.
