Frank,
You claimed Bowditch omitted Rios' name from his book. I posted a passage
from Bowditch in which he mentioned Rios favorably, and twice.
You dodged, saying: "... but those sections are directly pulled from Moore
unedited, aren't they?"
No, they were not. And it wouldn't solve your problem if they were. The
passage is in Bowditch. You said it wasn't. It isn't in Moore. You implied it was.
Moreover, there's no place in Moore for it. Bowditch wrote it to explain where
his method fit among those already in use.
You said the references were ". . . way out of date. The 'large and expensive
tables' refer to a completely different method of clearing lunars which
Mendoza Rios worked on some years earlier."
Those Rios tables were first published in 1802, so the argument cuts the
other way. The passage had to be written some years after Bowditch had cleaned up
the American copy of Moore.
As we all know, smoke and mirrors displays can be great fun. But I wish you
wouldn't use them in your arguments with me. Or at least, not when the
discussion is about something I take seriously.
As to why those gaps and odd characters in the subject line of my "Re:"
messages, it beats me. Every once and a while I think I'll look into the problem,
but it seems there's always something more interesting, or more pressing, to
do.
