Frank,
You are saying, then, that if the scope is parallel to the sextant, the
contact will be the same no matter where, in the field of view, you make it? Try
that at around 120 degrees.
The parallel wires make sure your contact is neither to the left or right of
center. Without them, it's hard to judge.
