Trevor ;
Books are written for more then one reason. You can write a book that is
intended to entertain or a book that is to give some understanding to the
masses and then there is a book that is intended to advance the cause of
education. I read this book and found it meet my needs and it rouses an
interest in the subject that I would not have developed otherwise. Yes I
enjoyed the book and under stand that it was written in a way calculated to
hold the interest of the ordinary man, not necessarily the absolute truth as
an outsider would have seen it. You say “But the real mistake was in
insisting on a good vs. evil plot instead of telling the story of what
really happened.” That literary device was used to good advantage to hold
the interest of the reader. If the reader drops his interest all is lost in
a book. I have not yet used GPS on any of my trans Atlantic crossings. I use
a sextant and chronometer because in the beginning it was all I had; now I
enjoy the feeling that comes from independence and knowledge. And that book
is one of the reasons that I study navigation more then is necessary just to
get from point a to point b without hitting point c.
All the best;
Robert Gainer
