    The "Barometer Fable" mentioned by Frank Reed is somewhat older than the reference cited...
    Maybe Alexander Callandra can be credited with publishing the "parable", but it was a topic of lively conversation in one of my physics classes at the University of Michigan circa 1958. Unfortunately this hints at my age, but my memory has often been refreshed on this fable during several discussions since.
    My recollection didn't include a recalcitrant student, but simply a wild discussion of the various possibilities.
