The black drop effect is a meniscus aberration which occurs as the
planet enters and exits the sun's disk. It is caused by the Earth's
atmosphere. I looked for it this morning in my projected image but did not
see it as it was described in the historical documents from the last
transit. Because the most important measurement used to determine the
distance to Venus was when it touched the suns edge this effect was a
terrible hindrance to the 18th and 19th century observers.
