I never heard of subtracting the index error from the measurement you performed. Always thought the average of the on- and off-the-arc readings was enough; after all, it's a relative measurement and it doesn't matter what you use for 0. Just for the record, the difference I got from the SD is almost 0.3'. (Embarrassingly it is 0 if I do subtract the IE first like you said :)
