    George-
<Does Robert Eno's compass manage to do without any liquid damping, I
    wonder?>
Some years ago I bought a good bearing compass made by Suunto. It was
offered with a heavy aluminum body for about $65 and a plastic body for $40,
I vaguely recall. I compared the two and there was no performance
difference, the solid aluminum block was simply a nicer heft and feel than
the plastic shell. And at that time $25 still bought many things. I still
own the plastic compass, it works quite nicely.

You can purchase tritium capsules as "Glow Ring" key chains on eBay, about
$9US in a variety of colors. They appear to contain one capsule about 2cm
long in a plastic key fob. It could be removed and used for general
illumination, but it is NOT comparable to the small capsules used to mark
    watch dials, etc.
