Thanks for the advice from several listmembers about mapping for the Lewis
& Clark journey (preferably on paper).
As far as the State-of-Missouri part of the journey is concerned, from
Cairo upwards, I hope I have found a solution. There's a new book just out
this month,
"Atlas of Lewis and Clark in Missouri" James Harlan, et al; Hardcover; @
$59.95 each, published by the University of Missouri.
It will be winging its way to me shortly. When it arrives, I expect to
report on it.
One snag I have discovered, in correspondence with the author, is that the
atlas isn't gridded to lat and long, but to UTM (universal transverse
Mercator, presumably) zone 15.
Can anyone kindly offer algorithms for translating (both directions)
between this and ellipsoidal lat and long, to within, say, a quarter-mile?
For my purposes, more precise definitions of datum, such as WGS84, are
quite unnecessary, but would do no harm.
The State-of-Missouri is only a small part of the immense journey that L&C
made, but it will do to be going on with.
