    Nice series, and yes, I remembered that comment before I read Jan's or
    your post. Those books are what got a prairie boy interested in
    sailing, and they are still in our public library (southern Alberta,
    Canada). In "Missy Lee", the uncle uses a sextant to determine his
    position while on an island ... I read it recently and there is no
    mention of an artificial horizon, but perhaps he could see the
    southern horizon from where he was.

    Not quite off topic, maybe, but pushing the edges a bit. :-)
