George, I was taught "Big Dipper" and Little Dipper even as a kid, but have never heard of Painter, Sails, Compass, Air Pump.
Sounds like they are trying to produce some new guide for children and nmes they can remember. (Ugh.) Or, if they are French and aiming at an "english" market, perhaps someone got too literal with translations.
