    I believe that you are referring to the Dead Reckoning Tracer, which has
    always been a secondary system used in CIC(Combat Information Center).
    While it is useful for plotting the position of a man overboard it is
    not relied on for a DR position over a long amount of time. It relies on
    inputs from the gyrocompass and the electromagnetic log but doesn't
    receive updates from the gps. While it is a very useful tool for
    plotting the relative position of contacts it is not as accurate or as
    easy to use as modern ARPAs and electronic charting systems. It is just
    one more of the systems that is going to disappear as the Navy moves to
    more modern (and maybe better, or maybe not) systems that simplify the
    way we do business on the bridge of a warship.

    way,you mentioned you were in the Navy so I figured you guys correct
    your
    charts.Do you guys still use the DR plotting(maybe they were called DR
    positioning)machines.I've seen them(there are pictures of them in the
    old
    Dutton books)but don't really know how they work.
