Just in case some on the list have missed this, the Mars opposition to occur on 27 August 2003 will bring Earth and Mars the closest together for possibly 60,000 years (estimated using Meeus' algorithms), with the next similar opposition a couple of centuries in the future.
A magnificent viewing opportunity for we observers of heavenly bodies.
Mars is already a spectacular sight in the sky at 9-10 pm local time here in Australia.
