    A modern spirit level has a taper ground into the inside of the glass
    tubing. Older levels had parallel sides but the tubing was curved. I'm
    afraid I don't know how accurate typical spirit levels are but my
    experience with construction-grade levels suggests that they are
    rather coarse.
