Subject: log lines

Dear list,
It seems that whatever type of towed log you have, it is nearly impossible
to buy a rotating fin for it at a reasonable price. After loosing both the
fins that came with the Walker Economy pack, I ran into a little-used
affordable Walker Excelsior IV. Last weekend I was at sea with my boat, and
one of the things I had to do there was to check the log's performance. On
saturday it was beautiful and quiet weather so everybody, ripe and green,
was out with his boat. The log performed excellent. But the great worry was
this: during the afternoon, _two_ boats, on different occasions, almost
snatched away the log line. In one instance it was due to the alertness of
my crew that the line was saved by pulling it in rapidly. Evidently the
skippers of the other yachts either did not see the log line at all, or
else did not recognise it as a log line! This story has, in my opinion, a
message in it about the current status of non-electronic navigation.
