 I think hull shape and current angle (to the hull) make a huge difference. A deep full keel boat will swing in a cross current when a shallow hull barely does. And head/tail on, neither shows anywhere near as much effect. That's one aspect where experience tells. Wind of course, affects you more if you have hull windage above water...one or the other, or both.
 I don't think numbers or programs or whatever are relevant here, since you'd have to have time on a boat anyway to see how she responds, and by then, you'd have experience. No?
