There is a US Army Corp of Engineer report titled "Handbook for Transformation of Datums, Projections, Grids and Common Coordinate Systems." Example 8.6 on page 90 contains a worked example of converting the geodetic latitude and longitude in WGS84 to Mercator coordinates. The report can be downloaded from the Defense Techical Information Center at the following link:
