In regard to Nels Tomlinson's post, I've been wondering whether it was
necessary to amplify the signal in these cables, such as was done with
relays in telegraphs. Perhaps the insulation preserved the signal over
longer distances, or they used more sensitive detectors than relays,
which I imagine gave rise to the clicks of the old telegraphs?
