Interesting you should ask that. My first sextant was a MKIX-A. I
initially used the averager (on land) to read off the sights and quickly
found that it was not only unnecessary but sometimes detrimental to the
accuracy of the sight. The averager was intended to be used for unstable
platforms, like a bucking, heaving, Lancaster Bomber. In this case, it
apparently served its purpose well.

For a stable platform like your backyard, you need not use the averager,
however, it should be noted that on the MKIX-A, you still have to re-wind
the averager to de-activate a shade which blocks sight aperture and which
is directly connected to the averager mechanism.
