Must be a very old standard... I have never seen it used in college, in old
textbooks, or on ships, even by my oldest fellow mates and captains. Our
standard notation was DDMMYYYY.

Silicon Sea date notation is MMDDYYYY because the program I use to calculate
uses and display's it in this manner. This is the "old(?)" European standard
nautical method. Since Silicon Sea is reaching near the end of the voyage in
a few more legs I am reluctant to change it at this point.
