Since we are back on this issue, I will fan the flames a little. Following
is a comment I sent to NIMA and the response I received. The response
clearly indicates NIMA's charter to keep Bowditch 'current' and to
systematically erase the past as it becomes outdated. I would suggest that
an archive of even the online versions of bowditch might be worthwhile
before they disappear from the NIMA site. To be fair, It is great that NIMA
is moving to all electronic documents. The worldwide pilot charts are in
progress but moving at a slow pace. I'm still waiting to see all those
electronic charts appear on their website at for the same cost (ie: free if
you don't count the US tax dollars and information volunteers provide at no
cost...). OH, I wouldn't hold my breath for that two volume version of
Bowditch. I don't think it is within the current NIMA charter. It may be
time to rework the title page of Bowditch.

The chapter/filename mismatch in the digital version of Bowditch 2002 is a
result of the elimination of former Chapter 29 (Position Reporting Systems)
and the subsequent renumbering of the remaining chapters. The original file
names were retained to preserve the indexing links already built into the
documents.
You are underestimating the effort that is required to convert a printed
publication to a digital one. Bowditch editions prior to 1995 will never be
converted to digital documents by this Agency. Also, there is no plan to
make the 1995 edition accessible on our site now that the 2002 edition is
available, as that policy does not reflect our mission.

While downloading the various chapters of The American Practical Navigator,
I noticed there is an error in the file titles starting with chapter 29.
the file names contain a number which is 1 higher than the chapter number.
For example: The file for chapter 29 is named Chapt-30.pdf. This continues
for all remaining chapter through chapter 37 whose file is named
Chapt-38.pdf. This will cause problems with the index function in Adobe
Acrobat. Keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing the other documents
completed and available on the web. For many individuals, access to older
editions of The American Practical Navigator would be desirable. I'm
referring to much older editions. One thought would be one edition per
decade to provide a method to view long forgotten information. Is there any
schedule for completion of the other documents?
