Be careful about class rules when choosing equipment that mounts on the
boat. Some classes (J24 comes to mind) don't allow any fixed
electronics, or at least didn't the last time I raced in that class.

If they are permitted, mast head wind instruments are much better than
handheld. A KVH Sailcomp compass has a starting countdown timer that is
quite handy IMHO.
