If you retain the traditional sextant structure, the micrometer wheel can have its own encoder. An encoder for the arc and one for the
wheel combine to send enough bits, without stretching encoder technology.

I don't think technology is the issue. Where is the market? Don't most people use sextants either because they enjoy it or they don't
trust electronics?
