I've had good success with glycerin. Put some ink or dark food coloring in it
and it's almost as dark as used engine oil. Non-toxic. Viscous enough that it's
not rippled by a breeze. I just use a shallow Tupperware container, peeling
off the top when I want to use it and otherwise storing it with the cover on.
Still works fine after 3 years.
