Well thanks, George and Herbert for setting me straight. Of course, after
further thought it makes perfect sense that refraction needs to be accounted for
in all cases. It's interesting to me how widely published is this misconception,
viz. that refraction can be disregarded in interstellar measurements when two
stars are located at the same altitude. I got the idea most recently from both
"The Sextant Handbook" by Bruce Bauer and "Celestial for the Cruising Navigator"
by Merle Turner. I also vaguely remembered the Ocean Navigator article
referenced by Herbert Prinz, it's a shame that they didn't publish his
subsequent letter.
