Those file types are not attachment standards. Attachment standards are ways of encoding binary files so they will pass through email. My mailer will
automatically recognize attachments encoded in MIME, UUEncode, and BinHex. I don't think those are specific to any operating system.
Once decoded, there are programs for Windows, Linux, OS2, MacOS, and perhaps others to display GIF, TIFF, and JPEG. I think most web browsers will
display them. Any of those file types could be encoded by any of the attachment standards I mentioned.
That said, I don't think it is a good idea to put attachments on messages to mailing lists, and most lists don't allow it. I don't know what the rules are on this one,
but better to send it off-list to those who ask.
