I think George will probably be much more comfortable when considering
a 3 axis marine fluxgate heading sensor made by a supplier closer to
home - who supplies [some of] Her Britannic Majesty's ships with Heading
  References, by all accounts.

On some ships of the line - and many aircraft, the fancy package containing
the strap down magnetic heading sensor is called an AHRS - "Attitude
Heading Reference System."

This is the three axis fluxgate and accelerometer used in Ultra's recent
offerings.

(For persons beyond the pale, I should mention that Ultra is situated perhaps
120 miles or less NNW of George's Oxfordshire stamping ground.)

AMR2
"The AMR2 is a true strapdown magnetometer designed to provide high
precision vector measurement of the ambient magnetic field and is ideal for
use in Attitude and Heading Reference Systems (AHRS).

"The use of strapdown fluxgate technology provides high reliability and
enables operation in harsh environments. The AMR2 has no moving parts and
thus overcomes the dynamic platform problems experienced with mechanical
gimballed sensors."
