Oh, agreed! Although, oddly, we were able to get a handheld fluxgate compass
to work on the steel-hulled and masted schooner Ocean Star (built and operated
by Ocean Navigator magazine in the 90's). Readings taken amidships weren't
very reliable but at the bow and stern the results agreed well with the
ship's compass.
FWIW, Raymarine (ex-Raytheon Marine) recommends keeping the sensor close the
ship's center of motion to minimize false readings from yawing motions.
