Subject: more groundings

Speaking of groundings:
Yesterday, we had not one, but two vessels grounding here around Cape Town.
The first was a Taiwanese fishing vessel of about 40 metres LOA. (the
previous Port Captain used to refer to these vessels as cockroaches!). It
dragged anchor and grounded just outside the Cape Town port. It was towed
off without too much damage it seems. The second grounding happened a few
hours later off the western side of the peninsula; A bulk carrier of about
147 metres LOA lost engine power and is sitting beached near Scarborough
beach. (This is about 15 miles from Cape Point / Cape of Good Hope). We went
to have a look yesterday from the beach.
(you may see some news at www.news24.com).
It was loaded with nitrate. Salvors will attempt to remove it today. We have
had gale force NW winds around here for the past few days.
Although these incidents were not navigation error related, I also heard on
the local news that solar activity may affect satellite communications
between now and October 15 - one wonders whether this could affect GPS
signals.
