Ed Kitchin is indeed right that quadrantal bearings are still used. The
famous ABC tables
for azimuth are designed to give a quadrantal result. The method is
available for students
using the electronic calculator. The result in quadrantal form can be
rapidly changed to
360° notation for plotting purposes. It is especially useful if the body you
are observing
is near the Prime Vertical any doubt as to whether it is North or South
quadrant is quickly
sorted out by the method.
