  Then there is the system that one no longer sees which had the form "N 45 E", "S 20 W" etc. for which I can't see any advantages but presumably they some at sometime.

  In reference to that system that I have not cut from my reply, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that plays a roll in celestial navigation calculations, using electronic calculators. That description of direction is used in calculating the quadrant that a bodies azimuth is in, I believe.
