History of the International Date Line

Subject: History of the International Date Line

Dear all,

More than a year ago I have pestered several list members of the
discussion groups mentioned above for information on the International
Date Line (IDL) and its history.

I have recently organised my material on this topic and now made it
available to all at my web site:

  http://www.phys.uu.nl/~vgent/idl/idl.htm

It is still preliminary in the sense that several items (marked in red)
still need to be checked or need further attention.

My reason for posting this version is that some of the open ends could
possibly be solved with the help of you out there. I would especially
like to obtain information on the following pressing questions:

  1) Who was the hydrographer to the British Navy in 1921?

  2) Who has easy access to copies of the Pacific Ocean Pilot
(whatever edition) and can provide me with details of how
the IDL is delineated in it?

  3) Who has reliable information on the eastern boundary lines
of the island republic of Kiribati as it is part of the
     current IDL?

I am of course always open for comments, corrections and suggestions for
other materials to add.

Thanks in advance,
