"Upper limb" and "Lower limb" refer to your own horizontal plane,
which changes its orientation continuously because you live on a
rotating earth (I suppose you do not live on one of the poles). So how
you observe the illuminated limb of the moon depends not only on the
relative positions of the sun and moon, but also on your position and
on the time of day. Suppose the moon passes thru your zenith: in case it
rises as an upper limb, it will set as a lower limb.
