Subject: moon visible by day...

I'm often intrigued by comments from people about the moon being visible
over here during the day. (I'm in Cape Town at 34 deg south) Is this unusual
in any other parts of the world since I had always assumed that it would be
equally visible by day elsewhere? Or is this just ignorance because the moon
is assumed to be nocturnal?
